When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King
That He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight
And He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring
There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind is Your Might
So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand
And Remember That Depth is the Greatest of Heights
And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land
And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right

chanticleer
Last night, Ryan and I went to hear Chanticleer in concert at a church just down the road from us. They are the best at what they do, and I thought I would post the songlist for those of you (i.e. my immediate family) who would care. Plus a picture of Eric Alatorre, because he's just that cool. (Dad - I asked him how his range was, and he said it's getting bigger all the time... So maybe now he can sing way off the bottom of the keyboard.)

lenten hymns
The mix cd for Holy Week contains hymns - songs that have lasted throughout the years as representative of the Christian faith. The majority are performed by Fernando Ortega, whose hymn arrangements are beautiful and creative. I have also included several Irish hymns from Michael Card's album Starkindler and a new arrangement of "Come, Thou Fount" by Sara Groves.

lenten miscellany
This week's CD doesn't really have a theme, other than one of "songs I thought would make a good CD for Lent." It's an interesting mix of old and new, & secular and sacred. I inadvertently included Bob Dylan's "Every Grain of Sand" on this mix as well as the first week's; but it's Bob Dylan, and a great song, so I have forgiven myself this mistake.

(lenten pause)
In all the excitement this weekend, I forgot to make a new mix cd. So today I am listening to John Rutter's Requiem as performed by the King's College Choir. This is in preparation for the mix cd that will have all choral music, which will be posted tomorrow.

lenten darlings
While there are many artists who have songs with Lenten attitudes, no one understands such things better than Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler. Somehow they embody everything that I associate with Lent - redemption, confession, mortality, knowledge of spirit, grace, mercy, and awareness of sin. So here is this week's mix cd: the darlings of Lent, Over the Rhine.

lenten rock
This week's mix cd consists of tunes that rock. While many would deem a good number of these bands inappropriate for anything focused on Lent, I have learned - and am learning - from these songs, and not least during a holy season. They are songs of action that both follow and lead to contemplation; both are essential to repentance. And besides, in the words of the immortal Christian band Petra, "God gave rock and roll to you."
